My next book
Here is an interview I did with School House Craft about signing a deal with Sasquatch books! I just turned in the finished artwork last week and I am really excited to see what the designers come up with.
Artist attendee Matthew Porter signs book contract with Sasquatch Books!
Matthew Porter, childrens book writer and illustrator, attended the 2011 SHC class "Book Publishing your Crafty Idea" lead by Sasquatch editor Gary Luke and current Sasquatch artist Kate Endle.
The class covered the submission process, what it's like to work with
an editor, understanding deadlines and revisions as well as standards in
royality payments. But the most exciting part of the class was that
students had the opportunity to sit down with a Sasquatch editor and
present them with their own book proposals!
We asked Matthew Porter about his conference submission experience...
"Andrea
Porter, my wife and one of the organizers of the conference, encouraged
me to attend the class. I was sold as soon as I heard I'd have the
opportunity to submit a proposal! It's always a challenge getting the
ear of an editor and nerves are a factor too. I liked the idea of
submitting my idea in a supportive environment. Before the conference I
thought up a few ideas and drew out some sketches. At the end of class I
had the opportunity to present my ideas to Gary. Some of the ideas he
passed on right away but one seemed to intrigue him. I explained the
idea in more detail and gave him my sketches. The whole meeting only
took about 5 minutes. I knew he would not be able to give me an answer
at the conference but I thought it was a good sign that he seemed
interested and took my sketches and contact information. I went home
exited and then three weeks later got a phone call from Gary. We talked
about the idea a bit more although he still did not offer me a deal. But
a phone call certainly seemed to be heading in the right direction!
After that phone call another three weeks passed when I got an email
offering me a book deal. Amazing!! I signed my contract and have
submitted my first round of sketches. I will be completing all my final
illustrations for May and should see my book out in print in 2013! The
process from conference to book signing was so great and I know it would
have been much harder if I'd had to go through the normal channels for
submitting. I'm really excited to now be a part of the Sasquatch
Publishing family and it is in part due to the support and encouragement
of School House Craft. "
It looks like Sasquatch will be at the event again this year so think about going! I know lots of my readers are people looking to get into publishing.

Year of the Dragon
Today marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year, the year of the Dragon. It is considered to be the luckiest year in the Chinese Zodiac. We could all use some luck I think!

Triceratops Commission
I have been doing a few more commissions lately which is fun! I created my first dinosaur last week. Hopefully, I get the chance to do some more in the future as I am quite pleased with how it turned out.
